Does Your Pet's Breath Stink?
This entry was posted on 2014-10-13.
Pet breath like we all know has that certain smell, but what do you do when your pets breath really smells bad and it just doesn't seem to get better? I suggest you start out by trying to establish the cause, could it be an:
· Infection
· Dental disease
· Something stuck in your pet’s mouth.
After which you may have to go visit your vet, what can you expect?
If you think your pet already has dental disease your vet will preform a dental procedure in which your pet will be anesthetized and its teeth cleaned or taken out if decayed. After this procedure you can continue feeding him dried food and brushing his teeth.
If your pet’s breath just really stinks your vet can help establish the cause. He may tell you that it’s an infection and your pet may just need antibiotics. It could also be an infected tooth root, which may need to be extracted.
If you think there is something stuck in your pets mouth then your vet will probably try to remove it while your pet is conscious but when this isn’t possible your pet will have to go under anesthetic.
Bad breath also known as halitosis is the result of odor producing bacteria that have built up in your pet’s mouth. If you pets bad breath persists you may want to visit your vet to get it checked out. In all instances you should treat halitosis as a red flag that should be explored further.
Prevention is the best way to deal with this:
Feeding your pet a dry food diet, like Hills Science Plan Oral Care for Dogs or Cats helps reduce the amount of tartar on your pet's teeth.
Alternatively you can brush your pet's teeth on a regular basis, but remember to use pet toothpaste and not yours.
